How a press built on a parks pitch took Harbor FC to the semifinal

Coach Mateo Ferreira on the pressing game his players learned on the city’s worst field.

Avalon Harbor FC train three mornings a week on Field 4 at Lowmarsh Park, a pitch so uneven that Mateo Ferreira calls it “the honest one.” The ball does not roll true, he says, so his players learned to win it back instead.

Harbor have recovered the ball in the opponent’s third more often than any team in the league this season, and scored 19 of their 41 goals within ten seconds of winning it.

“Everyone runs, or no one does”

“The press only works if it is all eleven,” Ferreira said. “If one player decides to rest, the whole thing has a hole in it, and good teams find holes.”

The club is the only one in the league without its own training ground. A deal with the city to rebuild Field 4 is due to go to the council in December.
