The Harbor Cup regatta goes ahead in 30-knot gusts

Eleven of 34 boats finished. Race officials say it was the roughest Harbor Cup in its 90-year history.

A dark sea under heavy clouds

Thirty-four boats started the 90th Harbor Cup on Sunday morning. Eleven finished. Gusts reached 30 knots off the headland, and two crews were taken off their boats by the harbor patrol.

“We talked about postponing,” race director Gwen Achterberg said. “The forecast said it would ease by noon. It did not ease by noon.”

The cup went to Saltmarsh II, skippered by 19-year-old Ivy Calder, the youngest winner in the race’s history.
